Artists for Schools
Artists for Schools
We think it's important to bring arts into schools. This will help demystify art as "posh", and inspire the students.
Our aim is to establish a roster of volunteer artists who are willing to spend a few days a year in schools.
We think this will be popular mainly with Secondary School, but you are never too young to appreciate art* so hopefully Primary Schools will take up the offer as well.
In school, you will :-
- Have a show of your work (optional. If your work is fragile a school might not be an ideal show location).
- Work with the arts teacher and their GCSE and A Level students - normally looking at some technique you use.
- Give one or more talks to other groups/classes as agreed with the school.
- Be "working" during lunchtimes/breaks and available for students to talk to.
Your commitment
None - we simply list you here so that schools can contact you. It's up to you to decide who you work with and how.
Schools
If you want to use an artist listed here, contact them direct. For best results be specific about what you would like from them, what resources you can provide (secure studio? corner of a classroom?) and how long you'd like them for (typically 1-2 days, up to 5 for a large arts oriented secondary school).
Local History Project
Currently Likal is interested in developing the Local History section:-
- Net Media History - anything out there - websites, YouTube etc that provide information about local history. Our core interest is Gloucester, and things of importance to Gloucester. Know of anything? Tell us. Existing Net Media History
- Oral and Living History - we would love to interview people about old times and new. We want ALL ages because what we record today will be of great interest in 20-40 years time.
- If you you'd like to get involved in the recording side, contact us. This can be a very interesting project for Schools, (get the pupils to interview their parents). We can supply the equipment and training if required.
- Heros we'd like to put up a page to represent each of those who died for our freedom since 1914. This could be an excellent project fro schools to get involved with.
- Guided Walks/talks around places of historical interest. If you have expertise, we'd love to make short films about local places, buildings and people of historical interest.
- Taking existing books/leaflets online There are quite a few books and leaflets about details of local history, esp buildings and parish histories. It would be good to get these online. If you are an author, please get in touch.
Map Gloucestershire
Map Gloucestershire with the OpenStreetMap project
Likal works with the OpenSteetMap project.
This is a grass routes* open source project aimed at building a digital map of the UK from the ground up, and available for all to use.
Participation is easy, if you have GPS. All you need to do is walk the streets, paths, bridleways etc, and, if so minded, take photos of buildings and items of interest. (Most of the city streets have been done, but the outskirts need doing and villages/countryside/paths are terra incognita).
It's the ultimate geography practical.
Likal has a GPS unit available (free) for interested schools.
If you'd like to get involved, contact us.
*Intentional pun.
Music for Schools
Music for Schools
We think there should be more music of ALL GENRES in schools, and schools have really good halls to play in.
It would be really nice if every school could stage a monthly gig/concert.
This will help promote the concept of live, local, music to the next generation, so good for musicians and bands.
Musicians / Bands - Your commitment
- You volunteer to play for no charge. You can charge for the PA etc if that's a third party, (but many schools will have their own PA available). If you need to charge, make that clear to the school at outset.
- You could also offer to workshop or masterclass with some of the students, if you feel comfortable with that.
- Most schools will want to offer these gigs at lunchtime or after school so for those with day jobs, you may need to take holiday. Make this clear to the school and feel free to lay down conditions - for example you might ask that the school give a flyer to all pupils, to encourage maximum turnout.
- EDU - if you have developed a package for schools, one that ties in with the curriculum etc you can also be listed, even if you charge for that.
Schools
- If you would like to use one of the bands/musicians just contact them direct.
- Be clear as to what you want - just a gig, or some additional workshop/masterclass/talk?
- Be clear as to what you can offer - type and size of space, whether or not you have a PA, or maybe you want an unplugged set.
- Do make sure you have listened to all the music on their site/myspace page.
- EDU - means that they offer a specific package for schools (which may be charged for).
