Adult Volunteers needed for Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Guides

Image (optional):

Our local Scouts have big waiting lists of young people who want to join, but a lack of adult volunteers means that they can't.

Don't be one of those who complains about "young people today" and worries about hoodies and gangs. Be part of the solution by volunteering. With age ranges from 6 (Beavers) to 18 (Explorer Scouts) there is room for everyone, and it's really good fun.

What's involved?

When you first get involved, your real value to us is that every new leader allows us to enroll more children and teenagers. We have to maintain a certain ratio of adults to children and every volunteer allows us to let in more youngsters.

At first you'll feel you don't know much but simply being there, as an adult, helping the current leaders, is a really huge benefit.

After that you can get as involved as you wish - maybe you have skills you can pass on for those doing badges. Cooking? Art? On camping trips while they go off for the day you might stay and read at the site, just keeping an eye on things, or keeping company the lad whose woken up with a stomach bug and can't go adventuring that day.

If you are an outdoors / adventure type person, then Scouting provides you with many opportunities to enjoy it and enthuse the next generation. You don't need special skills - all "risky" activities need to be run by qualified instructors - but your participation as an adult volunteer helps meet our health and safety and legal responsibilities. :-

  • For example, a canoe trip lead by an instructor. Health and Safety might require 2 adults. We'd rather have 3 or 4 - that way if something happens, it needn't ruin everyone's day.
  • For example - 11 year old turns over in the river. She's rescued easily enough and no harm is done. But she's shocked, upset, cold and wet and "want's to go home". Having a spare adult or two means that she can be taken care of while the rest get on with their trip.
  • Note that in this scenario the "spare adult volunteers" might even be non swimmers who just sat on the bank by the lake.

If you do have special skills - climbing, canoeing etc then we can help you with courses that make you a qualified instructor.
