Schools

Likal can be a powerful educational and promotional tool.

It can help your students, help you promote your school, and help build links with the local community.

Promoting the School

  • Anything that is added to the Likal by the school automatically promotes the school - after all, you'll be showing it at your best.
  • As a school you will control all content that goes out under your name.
  • Leverage your school website - add RSS (which is almost certainly included in the technology package used to build your site) and we'll take a feed and include it in our news area.

Nominate one or more staff (or trusted pupils) to be Contributors, and they can act as gatekeeper of the school content.

Building Community Links

  • Many of your contributions will relate to the local community, and be seen by them.
  • This ties the school to the wider community, and that recognition helps socialise students.

Educating Students

  • Where a project can be tied into the Likal, it means that the results will serve a real purpose, not just be for school.
  • Doing stuff "for real" is very powerful, especially for those who don't see the link between academic studies and work.
  • We can provide equipment (video camera, lights, training, GPS), and open doors. See below.

Ideas, Food for Thought

  • Local Reportage - have pupils cover local activities and people, in ways appropriate for their ages etc. Get coverage of local clubs. societies, activities.
  • Sports - send a media team (video, reporter, photographer) out to school matches. Create a "match report" package. Put it on Likal.
  • School Events - have them recorded and uploaded.
  • Environmental Projects - some students clear local streams, other make a package about why. Shows local community your involvement.
  • Oral History Projects - gets people into school, builds up valuable database over time. Record to video and add clips to Likal.
  • Creativity - no doubt lots of other ideas - bring them on. Lots of local bands want video made - music video and gig video.
  • Students Hobbies/Activities - got people who interesting things - active sports, ten tors, climbing, performing, campaigning etc. Make something of it.

Technology Requirements - (for quality video projects)

  • Camera - any decent camera is fine for web work.
  • Editing software - the free Microsoft Movie Maker is fine.
  • Mic - camera mics are very limited. Can't cope with extraneous noise, wind etc.*
  • Lights - for any interview or interior work lights are essential.*

*Likal are willing to lend (for free), for supervised projects - a mic, hand light and two continuous lights on stands.
