An annual (ish) Festival celebrating film in Gloucestershire.

Open to all, with a big focus on local schools and amateurs - not just the professionals.

Talking Heads - a peoples video history

The concept is simple - record people talking about their early life.

Education

It's an ideal project for children to get involved with as they can film parents / grandparents talking.
This is an ideal project for schools because it's wide open and unlimited.
It can be tied into many curriculum projects, in particular Local History (parents memories of 1970's politics, Queens Silver Jubilee?) and Twentieth Century World. Immigration is an issue that can be explored as many parents/grandparents will have been such.

WW2 - many children's grandparents will remember being children/young people in WW2 and the austerity period following. A contrast to today.

Shooting and Editing

Use a Static Camera (tripod, or just balanced) set up to frame the subject. A very simple style that doesn't require any panning, zooming etc.

Lighting can be formal, but generally any well lit location is fine.

Shooting styles
- Video Diary Style (easiest)
  - The subject just chats away about a subject, whatever they want to say.
  Grumpy Old Gloucester Style
  - The subject answers questions, but the questions are edited out.
  - The subject start their answer in a way that lets the viewer know the question.
  - For example "Daddy, what was your first job?", "My first job was.....".
- Interview Style (hardest)
  - This requires that the interviewer be heard, and usually seen. (So sitting next to the subject).
  - This approach is actually quite hard and requires confidence and clear speaking by the interviewer. It should only be attempted by older pupils, and even then, only those who are budding actors/actresses.
  - It is UNLIKELY that first attempts will produce usable results, it takes practice.
Editing
- Likal will do the edit if supplied with a Mini DV (most camcorders) or a data disk/USB storage (some modern types).
- Likal will return the edited material to the school to be uploaded (to YouTube) under their control

Shooting At School

Parents / Grandparents and willing volunteers can be invited to school and the recording made under teachers supervision.
Likal is willing to supply equipment and train the teacher (20mins over lunchtime will do).

Shooting At Home

Families with camcorders can record their own tapes. Take then to school and Likal will edit.

Showreel Project

This local band of part timers is a stonking Blues Bros Tribute band.

They need a showreel.

The best way to make one is a staged gig with multiple cameras.

That means we need people with camcorders.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to have a go at a gig shoot - with multiple cameras it doesn't matter if people mess up as there will be enough successful material. However a short class will be held to give tips / advice.

There will also be free tickets for parents, friends of crew as a good crowd will add to it.

Likal will do the edit, so this really is "turn up, shoot, go home".

Email if interested. If under 16, please ask your parents first, (and we'll need their agreement).

Video Project - Gloucester Academy of Music

GAM provides teaching and performance opportunities to local young musicians.

They are interested in the production of video recording their activities - rehearsals, masterclasses, informal performances and live events - for use as web video, so needs clips 2-6 mins long, not a carefully crafted DVD.

They are most interested in letting local students do the videoing as this fits in with their remit of involving as many people as possible. Ideally the project will fit into coursework, but enthusiastic hobbyists are welcome. Adult videographers also welcome.

GAM recordings will mainly be reportage - you record the events, not direct them, but there is scope for interviews etc if you have a willing presenter.

GAM recordings will always be in a GAM context (i.e. GAM adult CRB checked).

Likal supports GAM and is willing to provide lights, mics and tripod.

In order to be involved with this project:-

You should be able to provide your own camera ( any quality, it's for the web so anything better than a mobile phone will suffice).
You should be able to edit and agree to provide the edited clips within 10 days.*

* The edit should be simple. If single camera it's a just a matter of finding the start and end of each clip then adding titles. For multiple camera a bit more involved, but still doable with Windows Movie Maker (free with Windows XP and Vista).

This is a mix of three concert clips, mainly to show off the local students and pupils playing with the ESO professionals.

It was a wonderful event and a greatly enjoyed by the audience and performers.

Canticum Novum is based on Psalm 98, and written specifically to allow the particpation of a wide range of musical skills and talents, making it ideal for community music making - as here where hundreds of young musicians from grade 2 upwards are able to take part with the professionals.
