Map Gloucestershire

Map Gloucestershire with the OpenStreetMap project

Likal works with the OpenSteetMap project.

This is a grass routes* open source project aimed at building a digital map of the UK from the ground up, and available for all to use.

Participation is easy, if you have GPS. All you need to do is walk the streets, paths, bridleways etc, and, if so minded, take photos of buildings and items of interest. (Most of the city streets have been done, but the outskirts need doing and villages/countryside/paths are terra incognita).

It's the ultimate geography practical.

Likal has a GPS unit available (free) for interested schools.

If you'd like to get involved, contact us.

*Intentional pun.

Local History Project

Currently Likal is interested in developing the Local History section:-

Net Media History - anything out there - websites, YouTube etc that provide information about local history. Our core interest is Gloucester, and things of importance to Gloucester. Know of anything? Tell us. Existing Net Media History

Oral and Living History - we would love to interview people about old times and new. We want ALL ages because what we record today will be of great interest in 20-40 years time.

If you you'd like to get involved in the recording side, contact us. This can be a very interesting project for Schools, (get the pupils to interview their parents). We can supply the equipment and training if required.

Heros we'd like to put up a page to represent each of those who died for our freedom since 1914. This could be an excellent project for schools to get involved with.

Guided Walks/talks around places of historical interest. If you have expertise, we'd love to make short films about local places, buildings and people of historical interest.

Taking existing books/leaflets online There are quite a few books and leaflets about details of local history, esp buildings and parish histories. It would be good to get these online. If you are an author, please get in touch.
